essie, America’s nail salon expert since 1981, is a trusted nail brand and industry leader worldwide.  As a L’Oréal company, safety assessment is at the heart of what we do. It is a prerequisite for our choice of nail polish formula ingredients.  essie nail polishes have been tested with the strictest regulations in the world, wherever our products are sold.

Our products have always been safe, but we continue to find ways to improve our commitment to bringing the best nail polish to you. essie has been working over the past few years to optimize our formulas, and are already bringing new products to the market as 8-free, vegan formulas.  At essie, we define 8-free, vegan as nail polish formulated without the following ingredients:  formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, xylene, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, dibutylphthalate, triphenyl phosphate and no animal-derived ingredients.  As an expansion of this commitment, by the end of 2021, essie promises to formulate all our nail products as 8-free, vegan formulas.

We acknowledge it can be overwhelming to see products in the nail category with so many different claims.  Some nail products on the market claim 10-, 12-, even 17-free formulas.  We won’t do that – in fact, we’ve never formulated essie polishes with some of the ingredients these brands may list.  essie does not claim its products are “free of” ingredients that are not needed for the architect of any nail polish formula.  It is established FTC guidance to not claim the absence of ingredients that are not relevant to the category like gluten, parabens and lead.

Also, while we currently offer a number of vegan-friendly products, we are working to optimize our full portfolio so that all essie nail polishes are formulated as such.  You can always check the ingredient lists to find out more about our formulas.

You can trust essie to offer safe, salon-quality nail polish formulas in our thousands of colors and counting.   Our obsession with color is real – and so is our promise of color without compromise. Thank you for your continued #essielove.
